Mountains- Friends of Earth (2002): United Nations observed the year 2002 as the International year of Mountains with the objective of underscoring the importance of the roles the mountains play in supporting and sustaining the life on Earth. The volume discusses the following aspects of the day in terms of many world cultures of the past revered the mountains as the seat of the gods and considered these mighty structures on the Earth as unchangeable and indestructible. But we are fast learning that they are as fragile and vulnerable as any other earth surface feature such as forests, streams, lake or wetlands. Unless they remain intact, we risk droughts and water shortages as they sustain the rivers and freshwater sources, upon which the life forms depend. Home to one in ten people and sanctuary for a unique web of plant and animal life, mountain diversity is among the richest of all ecological zones in the associated micro climatic variations. Of the 20 plant species that supply 80 percent of the world’s food, for example, six originated in the mountains. Also, the very remoteness of mountain landscapes protects many crop verities from depletion and extinction.
But as divers as mountain ecosystem might be, they are quite fragile also. Unsustainable agricultural practices, exploitative mining, and widely spreading ecotourism projects – all cause undesirable disturbances in terms of pollution and degradation, floods and landslides. The mountain resources are increasingly subjected to outside economic interference etching away the biodiversity. The major objective of observance of the year of mountains is to highlight these issues so that pro-active management programmes may initiate at all levels- local, national and global. In connection with this programme, a compilation of articles on mountains and environment was published by Darsanam.
